No Shadows Here
Phil didn't see his shadow this morning, and come to think of it, neither did I as I walked around the corner to do some laundry earlier today. It's an early spring -- which means things are looking up. It's a grand way to begin a new year. Of course, today is the real new year's day for me and Phil, who both consider this date probably the most important on the calendar. I mean, if it weren't for this date, neither of us would be who we are today.
I'm now about thirty minutes into my twenty-fourth year of life. It's exciting. Birthdays are always nice, because you see who really cares a lick about you. I got some early morning phone calls today from some friends, a bunch of texts, and a gaggle of messages on my myspace and facebook "walls." Of course, technology nowadays tells us immediately whose birthday it is, so it's no big deal to actually remember it or worry about forgetting someone's. Which, I guess, is nice because it allows the birthday boy (or girl or groundhog) to feel worth. Which is a good thing.
So, today I feel like a million bucks, and gosh darn it, I look like it too!

Maybe it doesn't count now, but happy birthday. If it's any consolation, I do remember the date, and that Paul is six days later, and given some time, I could probably conjure your parent's phone number from the depths of my memory. It's weird what details from your childhood stick around.
yeah. i've got your parents' number in there. i memorized them all by the pattern they created on the keypad. it's weird. and your birthday is either the day before or after my dad's, and abby's is the opposite of whichever yours is. crazy, no?
So...
Do you ever have a dream that you're being born, and as you come out of the womb you see your shadow and, startled, you do an immediate 180 and start forcing your way back IN to your mom, the doctors and nurse unable to get a grip on your scrambling little rubbery limbs...
"Cripes, he's a slippery little sonofabitch! Nurse, gimme one of those grabby tools!"
"Okay... uh..."
"The... thing! With the grippy deals..! Over THERE! Oh, forget it! Just forget it! The kid's crammed his way back in... well, that's that. He ain't coming out of there for another six weeks..."
And your MOM wakes up screaming.
um, scary.
I must be the day before, because I remember her birthday too
